Your money is held by Fynex as an **FCA-authorised e-money institution**, and it's **safeguarded** — [kept separate from Fynex's own funds in dedicated accounts](/blog/where-your-money-sits/). Safeguarding means your balance can't be used to run the business and is protected if anything happened to the company. It's the protection that applies to regulated e-money, and it's a deliberate part of how Fynex is built.

## What "safeguarded" means

- Your balance is **segregated** — held apart from Fynex's operating money, not mixed with it.
- It's held under **FCA rules** for e-money institutions, which require that customer funds are protected.
- Because Fynex holds the licence, your money and your payments run under one regulated umbrella.

## Safeguarding vs bank deposit insurance

Safeguarding is not the same as FSCS deposit insurance, which applies to bank accounts. E-money is protected by **segregation and safeguarding** rather than a deposit-guarantee scheme — a different mechanism with the same goal: your money stays yours. If you need the exact regulatory detail for your situation, [contact support](/docs/account-and-team/how-do-i-contact-fynex-support/) and we'll point you to it.

## Why holds aren't freezes

Because funds are safeguarded and every movement is logged, a hold is always tied to a specific, reviewable reason — not an arbitrary freeze. See [Why are my funds on hold?](/docs/troubleshooting/why-are-my-funds-on-hold/)
