# Sub-merchant

A **sub-merchant** is a seller that takes card payments under a [payment facilitator's](/glossary/payment-facilitator/) master merchant account rather than opening a merchant account of its own.

## How it works

- The facilitator or platform onboards the sub-merchant, runs its KYC/KYB, and assigns it an identity beneath the master account.
- The sub-merchant accepts payments immediately — no separate bank application, no weeks of underwriting.
- Funds route through the facilitator, which settles the sub-merchant its share on schedule.

The trade-off: a sub-merchant gains speed but sits inside the facilitator's compliance and risk perimeter, not its own.

## Why it matters

Sub-merchant onboarding is how a marketplace turns a sign-up into a paid-out seller the same day. Done well, it's invisible; done poorly, sellers stall in verification, or worse, an unchecked seller creates fraud and chargeback exposure the platform inherits.

## How Fynex does it

Fynex runs [seller onboarding](/marketplaces/seller-onboarding/) — KYC and KYB — inside your own flow, and as a licensed e-money institution it can hold each seller's funds in a [marketplace wallet](/glossary/marketplace-wallet/) and settle their share cleanly.
